Weligama Bay and Mirisssa 6 km to the south of Weligama are the home bases for whale watching tours in the southern tip if Sri Lanka. Migrating whales hug the coast at this point and are available for watching especially during the November to April season. Sperm whales are quite common as compared to the blue whales

Weligama has an exceptionally beautiful and a green interior. Lagoon and mangroves, low country tea plantations, Sinhala villages and open air markets are less than 10 km away.

23km east of Unawatuna Bay Beach, the fishing town of Weligama meanders around a broad & beautiful bay, dotted with rocky outcrops & fringed with fine golden sand. As you enter the charming small town of Weligama from Unawatuna, the road splits with one branch running along the coast, & the other running parallel through the town centre. .
